Project Brief:

SAIGU is the Korean word for the date that the Los Angeles Riots broke out in 1992. When most people are asked to recall an image during this time, they bring up the endless loop of LAPD officers beating Rodney King or the smoke that lingered above the city for days. They also bring up the sound and images of gunfire from Korean shop owners as they defended their stores from looters. To many in the Korean community, seeing that footage on TV over and over again was a terrifying experience.

This is a collaborative project with three other Korean-American female graphic design students. We created a newspaper that would highlight stories and events for those in the Korean community affected by the lootings for those who did not witness the event. Separated into five sections: The overview, political corruption, skewed media, troubled economy, and interviews.

Section 1 ︎ The Overview

Section 2 ︎ Skewed Media / Interviews

Section 3 ︎ Troubled Economy

Section 4 ︎ Political Corruption
